Fashion modeling
Fashion is an industry area that has age preferences of 16-21 as this can ensure models have a more youthful look. Clothing brands want to showcase their clothes to a younger audience as they are the generation coming in. There are opportunities for mature clothing brands that work with older age groups but these aren’t as easy to come by due to the fact that the crowd is much smaller. The age preferences of the younger middle area can also give more chances to the models being more comfortable with industry requirements and new views a company may have.
Commercial modeling
Working in the commercial industry branch allows for wider age ranges and looks people carry. This is due to brands having different goals and topics to promote which can include using life experience as the voice. Brands see opportunity in those who have explored and experienced more to show younger audiences different stages of life and how to go through these. As the audiences change and their wants modify, companies see the importance of using models who are relatable and represent real people instead of creating a front for people to try to reach. This allows people to start at any age as well as the goal is to show the world who you are through confidence. Maxim magazine is similar to commercial modeling in the way they are open to working with models of all ages as seen in their modeling competitions.
Mature modeling
Mature modeling is targeted for those 30-50 and up starting a relatable base for adults. This type of modeling allows for people of all ages to have a chance to relate to something and feel included. Mature modeling also demonstrates that age isn’t a barrier in the industry and that anyone can do anything they set their mind to. This connects to positive messaging in the industry and sharing the idea that supporting each other is really what matters.
Factors
The reason there is no real barrier or range of age in modeling is the fact that who you are and how you work is truly what matters. Confidence and comfort in front of the camera and industry demands is an indicator of how great a model you are. Knowing that your work can be physically and emotionally challenging but being able to work through this shows your strength and is more likely to get you work then you age alone. Following the industry standards also is a way to make your modeling mark as following the specific look of what companies ask for can be the choice of which modeling branch you work in. Lastly, agency preferences take a role in your modeling career as this will connect you with companies and agencies to work with that follow your goals and what you aspire to be.
